Sudan Volunteer Programme – Teaching English in Sudan

March 24, 2008

Description: Sudan Volunteer Programme  (SVP) is a London based charity dedicated to sending graduates and under-graduates to Sudan to teach English at schools, colleges and Universities. SVP basic business is teaching English at various levels in Sudan. Mostly, conversational practice and discussion groups with University students and other adults and also in some secondary schools.

Most universities and colleges are now pressing for volunteers to offer a minimum of six months in Sudan – please consider this when making your application.

We will also try to put you in contact with past or existing volunteers who can share their advice and experiences with you.It is important to stress that we can only work with:
1. People whose native or mother tongue and first daily language is English AND who have studied at a university or similar institution i.e. who are graduates or undergraduates or,
2. Non native English speakers but with established qualifications or experience of teaching English.

SVP arranges and the host institutions pay for your accommodation and they also pay basic subsistence (approximately $130 per month in local currency). The maximum hours of work required of volunteers are 30 per week of which no more than two thirds would be teaching while the rest is preparation and marking or informal teaching. Some teaching within that amount may be organised in extra-mural teaching at public cultural centres.

In view of the present Middle East crisis and the violence in Darfur, it’s worth mentioning that Sudan, in the northern parts where we work, remains the friendliest, most hospitable and safest country I know anywhere
